Let's work together

What is critical illness cover?

Critical illness cover will provide you and your family with some financial protection in the event of you being diagnosed with a terminal or critical illness (such as a heart attack, cancer or stroke) that leaves you unable to work. It is likely that your diagnosis will result in a stressful situation, and a critical illness policy can help to give you some important peace of mind.

What critical illness cover includes

Critical illness cover will pay you the lump sum that you have selected for your policy in the event that you are diagnosed with a critical illness.

A serious illness policy can provide cover for the following:

  • The diagnosis of a terminal or critical illness (these will be defined within your policy documents and can include cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis or alzheimers/dementia).
  • Surgery for a terminal or critical illness that is covered within your policy.
  • You can choose to take out a single policy, or a joint policy where your partner will also be covered.
  • You can add a certain level of cover for your children if you wish, offering additional protection if they fall seriously ill.

These are just examples of some of the critical illness covers that we can arrange at Woodfield & Riley. As we know that no individuals are the same, speak to us today to find out which policies will best meet your needs.

Do I need critical illness cover?

Would you be able to cope financially if you were to go through a period of long-term sickness? If you are your family’s sole earner or you have dependents, it can be sensible to consider critical illness cover in case the unexpected should happen.

As no-one can predict the future, it’s likely that if you were to be diagnosed with a serious illness, you would want to make sure that life could carry on for your family. Therefore, having a critical illness insurance policy in place in advance will ensure you and your family are protected and limit the risk of any financial burdens occurring.

The lump sum that you receive will be made in a one-off payment (paid free of UK income and capital gains taxes), and you may use this how you wish. For example, you may choose to cover your mortgage or rent payments, meet living or medical expenses, pay for childcare bills or take a once-in-a-lifetime holiday with your family.

The cost of critical illness cover

The amount that you pay for your critical illness insurance cover premium will depend on several factors:

  • The level of cover needed.
  • The length of cover needed.
  • The age of the policyholder.
  • The policyholder’s current state of health.
  • Whether the policyholder is a smoker or not.
  • Family history of illnesses.
  • Lifestyle.

At Woodfield & Riley we understand that cost is important to you, but it is crucial to ensure that you are properly protected. With that in mind, we will take the time to understand your specific needs and recommend the amount of cover that is best suited to you.

What else do I need to know about critical illness cover?

You may also choose to add some extras to your critical illness cover policy. For example, these can include:

  • Separation benefit: If you and your partner have a joint policy and separate or divorce, it is possible to cancel this policy and start your own individual policy without giving additional medical details.
  • Cover for multi-fractures: This will pay a lump sum in the event that you break a bone, a bone, rupture your Achilles tendon, dislocate a joint or tear a knee ligament.
  • Permanent disability cover: If you are unable to work as a result of your critical illness, this will provide financial support.

It’s important to be aware that adding these extras to your policy will increase your premium. In addition, you should also note the limitations and exclusions of your critical cover policy, for example there may be a time limit from the time you take out the policy before you can make a claim, and you may only be able to claim if you survive for a certain number of days following diagnosis.
