Let's work together

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance can provide protection in the event that any incidents occur whilst you are travelling abroad.  This includes loss of possessions, medical cover and travel delay, giving you peace of mind in the event that the unexpected should happen.

Why you need travel insurance

Travelling abroad has a range of risks. For example, you could miss your flight, your baggage could be lost or delayed, or you could have an accident or fall ill.

If the unexpected happened and you needed to replace an entire suitcase worth of belongings (and potentially some expensive gadgets), or needed to pay for emergency medical care, would you be able to afford to pay for this yourself?

Health insurance whilst travelling can help to give you important reassurance in the event that things don’t go to plan on holiday and will ensure that any costs are covered so you’re not left out of pocket.

What does travel insurance cover?

A travel and accident insurance could provide cover for the following:

Personal accident cover for:

  • Dental injuries.
  • Loss of eyes and limbs.
  • Broken bones.
  • Loss of intellectual capacity.
  • Disabling injuries and permanent disablement.
  • Facial disfigurement (such as burns and scars).
  • Accidental death.
  • Personal property whilst travelling.
  • Travel and security assistance.
  • Travel disruption (including cancellation, rearrangement and replacement expenses).
  • Evacuation in the event of political or natural disasters.
  • Overseas medical expenses.
  • Personal liability.
  • Delayed or missing baggage.

Types of travel insurance

The main types of travel insurance for you to consider are:

  • Single trip: This provides cover for a single trip to one destination, usually for up to 30 days.
  • Annual: If you travel more than once a year, an annual policy will provide cover for multiple trips.
  • Worldwide: You can choose to cover to exclude travel to Canada, the USA and the Caribbean as part of your policy, as medical costs in these countries are more expensive.
  • Winter sports: If you are planning on going on a skiing holiday, this will provide an additional level of cover.
  • Families or groups: This provides cover for a family or group of friends under one policy.
  • Cruise: This will provide specific cover if you are going on a cruise, for example, cabin confinement cover, missed ports, unused excursions and air-lifts to hospital.
  • Seniors: This provides cover for older travellers who are more likely to have a pre-existing medical condition and are therefore more likely to claim for medical treatment while travelling.
  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions: If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you need to let your insurer know before you take out a policy, otherwise you won’t be covered in the event of a claim relating to this condition.

These are just examples of some of the types of travel insurance policies that we look after at Woodfield & Riley. As we know that no two individuals are the same, speak to us today to find out which policies will best meet your needs.

What else do I need to know about travel insurance?

You might be pleased to learn that taking out a travel insurance policy could take much less time than you think, as medical examinations are often not required.

It is likely that your travel insurance policy will have some exclusions (depending on the type of policy you take out), including:

  • Dangerous activities such as winter sports or bungee-jumping.
  • Destinations that the foreign office has warned against travel too.
  • Alcohol or drug-related incidents.
  • Acts of terrorism.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Natural disasters.
